Black Friday picks

How was your Thanksgiving? I hope you had a wonderful day filled with the people you love and your favorite foods.

So, are you ready for this year’s sales? I am, from the comfort of my home armed with a cup of coffee and my trusty iPad.

Let’s start with Madewell. Promo code CALMDOWN is good for 25% off your entire purchase. There are a few exclusions, such as leather and shearling jackets. These are my picks for myself and for gifts I purchased for my loved ones:

image

Arrowstack necklace. My favorite necklace that I wear all the time, as you may know. It goes with everything, seriously. I bought this for my sister, shhhh.

image

Pink & grey plaid shirt. I love this color combo, it’s a nice break from all the red, green and blue plaid flannel shirts. This will be perfect with grey jeans.

image

Grey jeans. I bought these a few months ago and they are in heavy rotation. I think grey jeans are just as, if not more, versatile than blue jeans. I can attest to the comfy stretch of these skinny jeans as I wore them yesterday for Thanksgiving. The inseam is perfect for my shorter legs, no alterations were needed. There’s a tall version of these jeans too.

image

Houndstooth sweater. I love houndstooth and this turtleneck sweater is just perfect with the loose neck and feminine sleeve length (it shows off your arm candy).  I’d love to get this for Xmas.

Next, my picks for J.Crew. Promo code HOLIDAY will get you 40% off selected items and 30% off everything else.

image

Stewart plaid button-down shirt. I owe you a review of this shirt. It’s true to size for me, I’m wearing a size 0. It’s a nice crisp cotton fabric so it can easily transition into a dressy outfit. But it also looks smart with your favorite pair of jeans, as I’ve done above. It’s a good deal at 30% off.

image

Pom Pom plaid scarf. How cute is this 100% wool scarf with the pom poms? This is 40% off so this would be an ideal stocking stuffer gift. It comes in three color combinations.

image

Fair isle vest. This print is so fun and festive for winter. It will add lots of interest to a plain solid colored sweater, button-down shirt or a turtleneck. I think a long sleeve chambray shirt would look great with this vest as well as over a denim jacket per the stock photo. This vest is 40% off.

What are you buying today or this weekend? Don’t forget about Cyber Monday!

Enjoy your weekend!

The cold is finally here after a mild autumn. I will be honest and admit that I’m not liking it at all. My tolerance for the cold has gotten less and less as I grow older. I fully understand the snowbird lifestyle now.

Until I think about a seasonal move to Florida, I’m finding solutions to keep warm. Here’s a practical option:

image

Red duffle coat (personalized 10% off promo code when you sign up with your email address). Also in blue here (up to 25% off your purchase depending on how much you spend with promo code GOBIG15).

I saw this jacket on the Girls of a Certain Age (it’s #9 on my Blogs I Follow list, which is on the right or the bottom) this morning and in a moment of weakness (or rather, freezing), I immediately purchased this down-filled coat. I opted for red instead of blue because the blue sold out in my size. But I really liked the contrast of the black leather toggles against the red, it’s just so cheerful. I’m already over my black puffer coat and it’s only November. I don’t think wool is going to cut it for me anymore in the cold, plus wool attracts dog hair like a magnet. You can give a good shake to a puffer coat or jacket and the hair will come off. My daily walks with Bella has me rethinking winter outerwear, ha.

Here’s a not-so-practical-yet-fun option:

Over-the-knee boots in Amaretto.

Swoon-worthy. I have wanted to try the OTK trend since 2008, when I first spotted these in London. But I was intimidated and I assumed this trend wouldn’t last more than a couple of winter seasons. Boy, was I wrong and once Stuart Weitzman rolled out these beauties last year, I was hooked. This amaretto color is divine and I thought it was not as ubiquitous as black, normally my first choice for suede shoes/boots. I cannot wait to try these on, I hope they work because my size has since sold out online.

Have you started your Christmas wish list yet?

Are you ready for Thanksgiving? Can’t believe it’s in two days!

Update: I returned the red coat because the XS I ordered was too short in the sleeves. It also had somewhat of a bell/bottom-heavy shape when it was fully zipped. I’m guessing it was the hip pockets that were on the outside and inside of the coat.

Sad news about the OTK boots, they went MIA (most likely stolen) after they were delivered. The silver lining is how Nordstrom handled the news when I called them. They immediately issued me a prompt refund and wanted to ship another pair, but they had since sold out in my size in the color I wanted. So, Nordstrom was really, really fantastic. I’m skipping the OTK boots trend for now, although I still love it on others.

Another & final update: The boots showed up at my home about a month later with major water damage. There was no note or explanation of what happened but the shipping box definitely looked like it was out in the elements for many weeks. The boots were damaged with many water stains. This confirmed that I want black or another dark suede color for my boots. In any event, I returned the boots to Nordstrom.

review of banana republic purchase

My Banana Republic Friends & Family sale purchase finally arrived (originally posted here) and I love 2 out of the 3 items.

First, the camel double-breasted blazer is really sharp. It’s a nice weight, I could wear it outdoors now (before it hits below the 40’s). But the reviews are true, the arms on this blazer are very fitted. Yet, the body of the blazer is loose or a little boxy, but I love the menswear silhouette of this. I’m glad I ordered a size 2 instead of my usual size 0, so the arms are still comfortable. I couldn’t wear a thick oversized sweater underneath, but a blouse or a thin sweater would be fine. I’m thrilled I now have a classic must-have piece, the camel blazer/coat, in my wardrobe.

Second, the blouse is my favorite. It’s a fantastic blouse for work or those dressier occasions. Or, I plan on wearing this with jeans and my leather leggings for a dressy casual look. I ordered my usual size, a XS, and it’s true to size.  The tie comes off easily, just unbutton the single button located under the collar, on the back of the neck. I like how the tie doesn’t shift around if you keep it on the blouse since it’s fastened with the button.  The tie won’t get lost either. You could also just leave the tie hanging and not tie it into a bow for that skinny scarf look. I also think the slightly exaggerated French cuffs on the blouse make it cool, very 60’s London rocker. This blouse definitely evokes a mood, which translates into elevating your outfit instantly.

Third, I’m on the fence about the crop top. What I like about it is the fabric, the texture and sheen make it very interesting and luxe. The issue is that it’s too cropped on my longer torso. I need to try it on with my high-waisted jeans and pants to see if it’s workable. I did post a pic on my Instagram if you want to check it out. But I’d rather wait and see for the blog, since it may still be too short.

Did you shop the Friends & Family sale? What did you love? Have a great week!

Update: I returned the crop top. I didn’t want to stress about whether you could see my bare midriff, so back it went. But I kept the camel blazer and white blouse!

Theory ‘Saiome’ poncho in charcoal/brick (similar for under $35); J.Crew Factory turtleneck sweater in black & leopard calf hair pumps (old, similar); Isabel Marant pour H&M black leather laced-up jeans (old, similar) & silver cuff bracelet (old, similar); Bar III fringe necklace (old, similar); Cartier tank watch.

My outfit from Friday night. We were out celebrating my husband’s birthday with a really lovely dinner. I am so proud of him, he inspires me daily. He also makes me laugh, you know the deep belly kind? As you can see, I’m having that exact kind of moment in the picture above. I hope I make him just as happy as he makes me.

I just wanted to mention to the people of Paris that we are thinking of you at this time.  Your beautiful and soulful city has always made us happy. We are sending our love and prayers your way.

cropped squared ootd

J.Crew Factory cropped sweatshirt in pastel pink (limited sizes left, but here’s another pink sweatshirt with a sequin hem); Caslon cropped chinos in Olive Tuscan (sold out in regular sizes, but similar here); Steve Madden Ecentric leopard sneakers (old, similar); Black leather studded belt (very old, similar here, here & here); Forever 21 grey scarf (old, similar).

I recently purchased this cropped sweatshirt mostly because I loved the faded shade of the ballet slipper pink. They have other colors available online as well. The fit is true to size, I’m wearing a XS.

I went with a tomboy vibe for the rest of the outfit: boyfriend chinos, sneakers and a belt with some serious stud action. It’s a bit windy today, so I added a lighter weight scarf to keep my neck warm.

Have a wonderful Thursday, the weekend is near–woohoo!

plaid, leopard & leather

image

J.Crew black watch plaid beaded popover shirt (old, Factory’s current version); Paige Denim leather leggings (old, similar, similar); Jessica Simpson ‘Mandalay’ ballet slipper flats in grey/black leopard (old, similar).

This is a very easy and comfortable fall outfit and my post from yesterday inspired me to break out the J.Crew black watch plaid top that I purchased last year. The leather leggings that I’ve folded to ankle length (I never got these altered but they are easy to adjust the length as needed) show off the ankle straps of my ballet slipper flats.

Unrelated but most important, thank you so very much to all the U.S. veterans and their families on this Veterans Day. My family and I honor your service and sacrifice for our country.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

friday’s ootd & the one that almost got away

image

Chanel boucle blazer (old, great $130 wool jacket); Hugo Guinness for J.Crew bulldog tee (old, similar); Madewell crop jeans; Puma sneakers; Omega watch (vintage); Cara studded leather cuff bracelet (old).

I’ve decided it was high time to put my Chanel blazer into rotation. Let’s get our Coco on. As they say, you can wear the classic black blazer with everything. Here, it’s with ripped jeans and a tee for a polished yet casual look. I just added my white leather sneakers to provide some youthful insouciance.

11/12/15 update: Madewell has restocked the Pumas and they are on mega sale here. Code EXTRA20 will get you an extra discount and the sneakers net to $43.99!

J.Crew black Stewart plaid shirt.

The J.Crew black stewart plaid shirt is back! I missed out on this 3 years ago and it’s FINALLY returned. I regretted sitting out and was hoping every fall and winter that J.Crew or J.Crew Factory would resurrect this plaid button-down. Today only, free shipping on any purchase amount and 30% off with code CARDSONLY with your J.Crew card (or 25% off with code NEWNEW). This spiffy number can go dressy or casual and it’s simply perfect for those holiday gatherings. I’ve heard from my Instagram intel that it runs a little small, so maybe think about going up one size.

Do you have or remember this shirt? It was ubiquitous on Pinterest a few years ago. I’ve seen it beautifully paired with a sequin skirt, layered under a fisherman’s sweater, tuxedo pants, vests galore, you name it. This shirt is the clothing equivalent of fall’s pumpkin spice.

Only 7 more Fridays till Christmas–yikes!

banana republic 50% off friends & family!

Did you know that Banana Republic and Banana Republic Factory Store are having a Friends & Family promo? You can get a personalized promo code from your local respective store and let me tell you, it’s so worth it. For Banana Republic, its 50% off for up to 5 regularly priced items (some exclusions apply such as 100% cashmere items). It’s a whopping 60% off for up to 6 regularly priced items at Banana Republic Factory Store.

It ends on November 8th, so tomorrow is the final day. I picked up these three beauties that I’ve had my eye on for awhile:

image

Camel blazer.

I first spotted this camel blazer on my Instagram and a few bloggers. Surprisingly, I don’t have a camel coat or blazer. I say suprisingly because I’ve always love these classic staples, they are simply timeless. And, they look amazing with black (there is an abundance of black in my closet). I decided this would be a worthy introductory piece and with the discount, it’s under $100!

image

Coated black cropped tank.

I’ve wanted a cropped top for some time, but nothing that would show skin. This little number is so luxe in the fabrication and texture! I think it will go perfectly with all my high-rise pants and jeans.

image

Tie-front blouse.

I love this blouse, between the classic white blouse thing going on and the black tie at the neck. And how great are the longer length cuffs? It’s so French girl to me, I had to give it a shot.

image

So there you have it, my personal picks from this awesome sale. Please check back in a week or so for my reviews. In the meantime, are you doing this F&F sale? I’d love to hear what’s on your radar.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend! xx

I switched out the leopard shoes and neck wear and kept the plaid flannel shirt and crepe jogger pants for two different looks. The first outfit is perfect for a casual date night and the second outfit is great for running errands.

The cool jogger pants were a gift from a lovely girlfriend, they are true to size (I have an XS) and are so versatile. I wore them with the moto-inspired jacket she also gifted me (shown here) and I felt like a million bucks. They have a subtle satin seam detail in the sides, which adds a dressy flair. But you can also pair them with sneakers and that brings out the true nature of the jogger pants.

Enjoy your Thursday, the weekend will soon be here! xx

Here’s yesterday’s outfit, which worked for the dark and cloudy weather. I thought it was going to pour on our walk to and from church but it didn’t (thankfully). It was windy though and this Woolrich raincoat blocks out the wind and chill like a champ. I guess wearing a solid raincoat is like carrying an umbrella with you, it won’t rain if you have it on you but it will downpour if you’re caught without!

Happy Monday to you!
